Adding a solar cover to an old pool with an inefficient pump just means a torn solar cover. Throwing a high-efficiency heater on a pool with a poor filter equals a broken heater. Bolting a variable speed pump to a poor filter and incompatible plumbing equals a broken pump. You get the idea.
Start With an Audit, Not a Shopping List
Prior to purchasing a variable-speed pump or a solar blanket, someone needs to make a real assessment of the pool’s condition. Is the shell leaking heat and water? Is the pump pushing more water through the system than it actually needs to? Are all plumbing joints water-sealed? How much water, heat, and industrial-strength liquid chlorine has the pool been sucking down a season?
An old pool that leaks, turns and burns water inefficiently, and constantly needs its chemistry tweaked will waste input regardless of the green gadget attached to it. You can slap on the most efficient pump in the world and if half your water is going down a hairline crack in the shell, all is lost. The audit is boring. It’s also the step that decides if every dollar spent after actually does anything.
The Bucket Test Still Matters
All pools lose some water to evaporation. Heat, wind, and surface area team up to suck a bit of liquid out of every pool on the planet every day, and that’s normal. What’s not normal is assuming all your water loss is evaporation when some of it is just the pool leaking water structurally and operationally.
The bucket test is still the easiest way to tell. Fill a bucket with pool water, mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level on the tile line, then check both after 24 hours with the pump off. If the pool has dropped notably more than the bucket, you’ve got a leak, not evaporation. Same goes for pools that lose water overnight when nobody’s been swimming, that’s not the sun doing it. Fix leaks first. Every other upgrade on this list assumes you’re not just pouring treated, heated water into the ground.
Sequence the Work so You’re Not Paying For Labour Twice
The most common mistake owners make isn’t their choice of upgrades. It’s the phase payment of those investments over such a long period of time that each other trip in the project triples in cost when the plaster has to be replaced again. (Pools aren’t cheap to drain out and pull apart.)
A better way to think about it is in three tiers.
Quick wins you can bring a tradesperson in for today. Those may involve a thermal cover, a timer, and if the existing fittings are compatible with it, LED lighting.
Mechanical upgrade type works which should involve some coordinated plumbing or electrical while you’re at it. Variable-speed pump, filter swap, salt or ozone.
And ‘Renovation-scope’ type work. This is where costs spiral out of control if phased. Resurfacing fits in here, as does solar or new heat integration, full automation, any plumbing changes associated with a circulation upgrade, and any and all repairs or improvements required beneath the waterline.
When you’re talking about moving lights, your plumber needs to be there also to sort out the suction lines. They’re directly linked jobs and can’t be phased without absolute clarity around the electrical requirements prior to the concreting stage. Fixing structural issues isn’t cherry-picking. If you suspect any of the systems holding water on or below your deck aren’t doing their job, you have to fix that. Fixing plaster isn’t optional if you want to swim without shredding your feet. It’s just happening at the same time because the two steps are so entwined.

The Pump is the Biggest Energy Problem You Own

No one ever considers their filter a water-conservation issue, but it kind of is. Sand filters need weekly backwashing, and every backwash sends a significant amount of water straight down the drain. An old sand filter that’s needed weekly backwashing for years is discharging a lot of treated water over a pool’s lifetime.
DE filters produce clear water but have their own maintenance requirements and still backwash. Cartridge filters are the Goldilocks filter to think about during any renovation: they don’t backwash at all, just rinse, and they’re a legitimately easy switch for someone working on an older pool with water conservation in the back of their mind. They’re not right for every pool, but if you’re already opening the plant room to get at the pump or plumbing, it’s worth asking the question.
Resurfacing is a Sustainability Upgrade, Not Just a Cosmetic One
Resurfacing sounds like a cosmetic repair for the pool, however, it’s more important than that. When algae has rough, cracked plaster to root in, the pool requires more chlorine to keep it clean. This rough surface also sheds dust and calcium into the pool, causing chemical imbalance and even more chemical use. Newer composite surfaces such as quartz, pebble, and glass bead last nearly twice as long as plaster before the pool has to be drained and resurfaced again. They also feel spectacular underfoot and create a stunning water colour. However, their biggest benefit is that their smooth, solid, nonporous finish resists algae in the first place. This means low chlorine demand, low chemical use, and far less ecological impact over the pool’s lifetime.
Heat Retention Has to Come Before Heating Upgrades
Solar pool heating and heat pumps are not cheap to install. But what’s the point in spending all that money for heating if it’s just going to float away on the evening breeze? Most heat loss happens through surface evaporation. This occurs mostly during the time you aren’t using your pool: at night or when you’re at work. Pool water heated by your air-source heat pump can cool down rapidly when it is not covered at night and the air temperature drops.
A cover is the cheapest method for achieving three of the most important things that any energy-efficient product must do: cut consumption wastage and shift those savings straight into your pocket (cheap); make the heating you’ve chosen do the work it was designed for (effective); and make your pool a wonderful place to spend your leisure time (valuable).
Sanitiser Systems: Know What You’re Actually Reducing
Salt chlorine generators are often marketed as “chemical-free,” but that’s a misnomer. They are still creating chlorine; it’s just being created on-site from dissolved salt instead of you adding chlorine from bottles or tablets you purchased elsewhere. What they eliminate is the purchase, transport, and storage of packaged chlorine. The pool still has chlorine in it, just like it does with the other types of systems.
Ozone and UV-C work in a very different manner. That equipment is simply additional, standalone treatment that helps destroy things in the water and reduces how much free chlorine the pool needs in order to maintain sanitary conditions. Neither of these pieces of equipment is designed to eliminate the need for free chlorine. The answers to the questions of how much free chlorine you have and how you are adding or creating it are really the keys to this decision.
The other thing to watch for is compatibility. Salt environments can work havoc on some older plaster types and fittings. UV-C and ozone both present extremely reactive types of water, and the radiant/copper link is disconcerting to a number of plaster manufacturers who have seen failures where the owner insisted they had balanced the water. This won’t necessarily eliminate any of these options, but you should not have to pay the cost for any extra drainage or replacement of fittings as the result of the installation of the new sanitation style.
Don’t Skip LED Lighting During Renovation
LED underwater lighting is one of the simplest upgrades available. If you’re already doing a shell resurface, then there’s really no other time where it’s easier to switch out your pool lights. 1,000 lumens of LED light uses about 20 watts to produce (compare that to an incandescent or halogen pool bulb that needs six times the energy to produce half the light).
The Upgrades Work as a System, Not a List
None of these upgrades deliver their full value in isolation. A variable-speed pump with an undersized filter still wastes water on backwashing. A heat pump without a cover heats the night air more than the pool. A salt system installed over failing plaster just accelerates a surface that was already on its way out. Treat the aging pool as one connected system, fix the shell and circulation first, then build the efficiency upgrades on top of that foundation, and the renovation pays for itself in ways a scattered upgrade list never will.
