As creative hobbies go, few are as rewarding as blogging. They can be started for free but can become very financially lucrative. However, like any other rewarding activity, blogging has a learning curve. It’s not as easy as writing some words and publishing them on your website. Increasing your chances of success means learning about marketing and more.
If you’ve been thinking about writing a blog but are unsure how to get started, this guide walks you through the essential steps you need to follow for the best chance of success.
Choose your niche
The most proven way to gain credibility and build an audience is to focus on a specific niche. Ideally, this will be an area where your interests and expertise cross over with the needs of your audience.
One good way to find a niche is to document a journey you are going on or an experience you are going through. For example, if you’ve just become a new mother then a baby blog could be a good way to document precious moments with your little one while educating and inspiring other parents. This is one of the most popular ways for mothers to make money online.
Choose the right platform
As important as the content of your articles is the design and layout of your blog. Building your website independently gives you the greatest degree of control, but is complicated and requires a lot of expertise. Most bloggers sign up to a hosting platform like WordPress or Blogger.
Most platforms offer templates which can help you create a beautiful blog in minutes while still giving you control over essential branding elements such as colours and fonts.
Choose a good name
First impressions count online just as they do in real life, and the first thing most visitors to your blog will see is its name. Choose wisely, because in their minds your blog’s name reflects the focus and tone of your content.
Plan your articles
If you want your blog to be read, you cannot simply write whatever you want. Your content needs to strike a balance between what you want to write about and what your audience wants to read. This requires some research on your part, but it doesn’t need to be difficult.
An easy way to start is by googling the topic you want to write about and seeing what people have already written about it. If the existing articles are inaccurate or unsatisfactory to you, it’s a good sign that you have something valuable to write about.
Promote your blog and make money
Plug your blog on your socials to further build your audience, and once it is large enough you can turn it into a real side hustle that generates income. There are several ways you can do this, including brand partnerships, affiliate links, or selling your own products.
Conclusion
Blogging can be a fantastic creative outlet as well as a source of income for mothers, and it can be started from home for free, with no special equipment required. Competing with millions of other websites will not be easy, but niche content, great branding and carefully researched articles will give you a good chance.
