5 Tips for an Overwhelmed Mom

Mothers are a lot like superheroes. They often take on many roles, including caretaker, chauffeur, comforter, and provider. From going to work to changing diapers, the typical mom has enough on her plate to keep her moving around the clock. But, just like most of the superheroes you see in movies, moms have their limits. If they try to push beyond those limits, they could come face to face with overwhelm and eventual burnout.

If you’re a mom who’s struggling to find time to breathe, it’s crucial to address the problem before it gets worse. You may be able to find greater peace and relaxation by analyzing and rearranging your life a bit. Here are five ways to manage feelings of overwhelm as a busy mom.

1) Talk to Someone

Talking is one of the best forms of therapy available. There’s something extremely comforting about being able to express your feelings and worries to another person. Ideally, you have someone in your life who’s always willing to lend a listening ear. That person might be a sibling, parent, best friend, or co-worker. Talking to “your person” regularly can help relieve stress while maintaining important relationships.

Besides talking to one or more close family members or friends, you might also want to talk regularly with a therapist. A trained therapist can offer expert advice and coping techniques to help you manage the stresses of life. They can also suggest ways to decrease feelings of overwhelm and enjoy a higher quality of life. If you’re looking for cheap therapy, online treatment may be a good option. It’s often less expensive because online therapists have fewer overhead costs than therapists who practice in a brick-and-mortar building.

2) Simplify Your Life

Take a minute to analyze your daily life. Is it too full of unnecessary things, clutter, and time-wasters? If so, it’s not surprising that you’re struggling just to keep up! One of the most freeing things you can do as a busy mom is to simplify your life. That means tossing every unnecessary and unfulfilling thing out of your life.

Here are a few top suggestions for simplifying your life and daily schedule:

  • Declutter your home: Donate or throw away anything you don’t need or use.
  • Simplify your family’s schedules: Figure out what extracurricular activities to eliminate. It may be tempting to enroll each child in multiple weekly activities. However, simplifying schedules can relieve stress for both you and them.
  • Try meal planning: If possible, plan, shop for, and make your family’s weekly meals ahead of time. Many busy moms choose to do this on the weekends. Planning ahead guarantees less stress throughout the week.
  • Limit social media time: It’s amazing how quickly time flies when you’re scrolling mindlessly through social media feeds. Before you know it, a huge chunk of your day could be gone, leaving you with little time to handle all of your daily responsibilities. If you tend to get lost in Instagram reels and Pinterest boards, consider setting a social media timer for yourself.

These are just a few of the ways you can simplify your life as a busy mom. It’s important to take a critical look at how you spend your time each day and identify anything else you can do to avoid overwhelm.

3) Create a Family Schedule

Does it feel like all the members of your family are constantly running around in different directions? Creating a weekly or monthly family schedule can help you manage all the different commitments and activities. You could do this the old-fashioned way by writing activities into a paper calendar. However, there are easier ways to stay organized, thanks to digital scheduling tools.

There are many ways technology can simplify your family’s life. For example, family scheduling apps like Chore Monster, Cozi, and OurHome can make family organization a breeze. They can also help busy moms avoid forgetting important appointments and events. Maybe try a few apps with your family to see which you prefer.

4) Prioritize Tasks

If you’re like most moms, you probably have a daily “to-do” list that seems a mile long. You’ll be lucky if you can get through a quarter of your list on a good day. To avoid overwhelm, it’s crucial to prioritize your daily and weekly tasks. Giving yourself permission to focus on a few of the most important tasks can help you avoid getting overwhelmed by too many things at once.

When prioritizing tasks, start with the most important things, then work your way down the list. For example, taking your child to their dental appointment is probably more important than tackling the dirty dishes in the sink. Prioritizing helps ensure you handle the most crucial daily tasks, even if you can’t get to the less important ones that day.

5) Take Time for Yourself

As busy as your daily schedule may be, it’s so important to take time for yourself. Otherwise, you’re almost guaranteed to experience burnout at some point. Each day, you should allow yourself to take regular, short breaks to simply breathe and recharge. Beyond these short reprieves, it’s also wise to schedule activities you enjoy. Put them in your calendar and treat them with the same importance you’d treat any other meeting or responsibility.

For example, you might schedule a regular date night with your spouse each week. Don’t cancel, no matter how busy your schedule may be. You might also schedule nightly bathtime to wind down before bed or a bi-weekly massage to help you relax and recover from stress. Reserving time for yourself is a great way to avoid getting overwhelmed with your life.

As a mom, you can practically guarantee that your life will be crazy at times. However, you can find contentment in the chaos if you learn how to manage stress and stay organized. Use these tips to avoid overwhelm and start enjoying your full, fulfilling life.
