Choosing a child’s school program is a serious decision. Some programs operate a number of hours a day for a couple of days per week. Others offer a full day of learning.
Both alternatives have their own benefits based on the:
- Age of your child
- Family schedule
- Childcare needs.
You need to know the differences between these options. This way, you can choose the best program.
Part-time preschool
This typically consists of shorter hours a day or fewer days a week. Most of the programs offer 2-4 hour morning or afternoon classes.
Common schedules in Iowa programs:
- 2-3 days per week
- Morning sessions. For example, 8:30–11:00 AM
- Afternoon sessions of the same duration.
This program is not designed for full-time childcare. It is a facility of early learning and social development.
Part-time programs would be effective when:
- You or someone else is at home all day.
- It is the first time your child is going to school.
- You desire a gradual transition to structured learning.
- Your child is younger (approximately age 3).
A shorter timeline can assist younger kids in slowly adapting to classroom activities. It also enables them to retain their typical home schedules.
Full-time preschool
This is usually a full school-day program. Children attend most of the day for five days a week. Just like elementary school.
These programs normally entail:
- Organized educational tasks.
- Meals or snacks.
- Outdoor play.
- Rest or quiet time.
- Social skill development.
Full-time preschool is both:
- A childcare facility
- An educational program.
This option works best when:
- Both parents work full-time.
- You require daycare on a regular basis.
- Your child is transitioning to kindergarten.
- Your child thrives in routines.
For example, a full-day preschool in Des Moines may suit kids approaching kindergarten. It can familiarize them with the demands of elementary school.
Cost considerations
Another factor that counts in the selection of part-time or full-time preschool is cost.
Part-time courses are cheaper in the long run. This is because they provide fewer hours. Full-day preschool, of course, costs more.
Before making a choice, take into account other expenses like:
- Transportation
- Meals
- Before or after school care.

Personality and child readiness
Now, leave alone logistics. The temperament and preparedness of your child matter in your decision.
Some children excel in extended programs. They are happy to form friendships and engage in prolonged activities. Others enjoy the advantage of reduced days. They like to spend more time at home.
Here are some indications that your child may manage a full-day schedule:
- They are comfortable being with the caregivers.
- They can adhere to group routines.
- They have a good social interest in other children.
Younger students or first-time students can consider the part-time option. Then, transition afterward.
The final decision
Evaluate three variables:
- The needs of your child
- Your schedule as a family
- Your budget.
Part-time preschool can be the best for slow learning. It is ideal for families with flexible schedules. Full-time preschool offers greater structure. It is dependable for working parents.
