The run up to Christmas can be stressful as it is busy and expensive, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less fun than any other time of the year. Whenever you walk down a High Street you’ll see decorations wishing you a happy Christmas and you’ll see shops full of Christmas trees, tinsel and baubles. If that doesn’t get you into this Christmas spirit, then there’s obviously something else going on, because sometimes the simple glimpse of Christmas decorations and a beautifully adorned tree can get you right into the spirit of Christmas before it’s even begun.

There is a lot of grumpiness and bah-humbug out there, given the state of the world at the moment, but Christmas is still supposed to be a festive and joyful time. We can’t always control the genocides happening in Palestine or the issues happening with Ukraine and Russia, but we can control how we feel about Christmas. From listening to the best Christmas songs to finding as many candy canes as possible to add to your hot chocolate, there are plenty of ways that you can ensure that you are feeling Christmassy before the big day. Below, we’ve got some suggestions to help you to get there sooner.

  • Go look for the Christmas lights. At Halloween, you and your family likely drive around the neighborhood to look at the awesome Halloween decorations that people have put outside their homes. The Christmas lights can give you the same thrill of excitement. From beautiful icicles that hang from street lights to finding the lights that are strung across the high roads, there are plenty of places that you can go in your local town to find the best Christmas lights. It’s also a very cheap evening out because then all you have to do is pay for petrol. You could add hot chocolate into thermos mugs and bring candy canes with you.
  • Play Christmas songs. Whether it’s the favorite Christmas carols that you may have or it’s listening to the best Christmas songs of the 80s and 90s. There are so many songs out there that you are really going to get into for Christmas. Everybody loves to sing along to Here it is, Merry Christmas and the Fairytale of New York and it’s all about feeling those songs and sending yourself back to your childhood when you first heard them.
  • Start layering on the Christmas movies. Home Alone and Home Alone 2 are obviously up there with the top two Christmas movies of all time, but so is the Santa Claus movie with Tim Allen and The Muppet Christmas Carol. You’ve got to find a good mix of funny and sorrowful Christmas movies to really get into the spirit.
  • Exchange a gift on Christmas Eve after the children have gone to bed. You and your partner should exchange one gift each with no interruption from kids. Not only will this give you something to do together, but it will help you to feel that Christmas spirit. Because what you should be doing at this point of the day is sitting with the candles on the Christmas movies, playing and eating as much chocolate as your weight can bear.
