How To Prepare For Fall Swim Lessons


Preparing your child for fall swim lessons can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared yourself. Here’s a checklist of the things you’ll need to get ready to ensure the process goes smoothly. With all these steps covered, your child will be able to hit the pool without worry this fall!

Do a few lessons yourself

You can do a few lessons with your kid to help them feel more comfortable and ease into things. This way, they can get used to the teacher and the other kids. Plus, it’ll give you a chance to see how the lessons are going and what your kid is learning. When you’re in the pool with your kid, help them practice floating on their back and front, kicking their legs, and blowing bubbles. They should also get used to putting their face in the water. It’s also important to talk to your kid about listening to the teacher and following instructions.

Arrive early

  • Sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, even on a cloudy day (if you’re still outdoors in the fall)
  • A water bottle to stay hydrated during your lesson.
  • A snack or light lunch if you’re taking a morning or afternoon lesson and will get hungry afterward.
  • A swimming cap if you have long hair that you don’t want getting in your way while you swim.
  • Goggles to help keep the chlorine out of your eyes and improve your visibility underwater.

Have fun in the water!

Swimming is a great way to stay in shape and have fun at the same time. Consider signing up for more than one session, if possible. The earlier children start swimming, the better they become at it over time. Get your little one to be more comfortable in the water by going to a public pool and having them stay in the shallow part while you’re in there with them. Be sure to put floaties on them so they can feel a little more secure. Whatever you do, do not try to force them or do anything that can ruin the experience for them. Baby steps are the best way to ease into new experiences.
