How to Plant, Grow & Harvest Blackberries

If you like blackberries, you have probably already thought about growing them more than once. But do you know how to plant blackberries? It’s really a very simple process.

However, it is important that we know what are the optimal conditions for these vegetables. If not, then most likely our cultivation will not be successful.

But don’t worry. In this article, we will mention which varieties are the most cultivated, how to plant blackberries, and how long does it take to bear fruit? We will also talk about the optimal conditions and aftercare that these plants require. In short: everything you need to know to grow delicious blackberries! Don’t miss it.

Most cultivated varieties

Mediterranean blackberries are more tolerant of hot climates.

Before explaining how to plant blackberries, let’s first look at which varieties are most widely grown around the world. We can distinguish two groups: Spiny and unarmed, which are spineless:

Prickly Blackberry

Ashton Cross, Bailey, Bedford Giant, Cherokee, Dewberry, Himalaya, Loganberry, Runguer, Tupi, Youngberry, etc.

Naked Blackberry

Aurora, Black Diamond, Black Satin, Darrow, Dirksen, Evergreen, Loch Ness, Smooth Stem, Thornless, Thornless, etc.

Also worth noting is the presence of the Mediterranean blackberry, It differs mainly from others in that it is able to withstand a much hotter climate, which we can already imagine from its name. Therefore, if we live in the Mediterranean region, this is perhaps the most recommended blackberry for our cultivation.

Tips on How to Plant Blackberries

When it comes to planting blackberries, this task is not very difficult. We just need to dig a hole and plant a plant in it. It must be said that this is a very invasive plant, so if we are not careful, it will eventually take over our entire garden or vegetable garden.

Thus, it is best to build a terrace to control its growth. Otherwise, planting blackberries is a piece of cake. However, in order for our cultivation to be successful, we must take into account a number of aspects such as location, climate, care, etc.

Optimal conditions

Blackberries are used for humid and temperate climates. Therefore, they do not tolerate great heat and do not follow it. However, in order for them to ripen properly, they need to survive a short period of heat during the summer season. This is one of the main factors for achieving greater productivity, along with cold hours.

As for the soil, fortunately, they are not very demanding. However, blackberries generally prefer moisture and good drainage. In addition, a neutral or slightly acidic pH is recommended. On the other hand, Mediterranean blackberries tolerate alkaline soils with little moisture much better. It should be said that the genus to which this plant belongs is called Rubus, very extensive. Therefore, it is not surprising that climatic and ecological conditions vary greatly depending on the species.

In order for our blackberries to grow and develop properly, we must add additional organic matter to the soil. For this we can use compost or humus, both are great options for feeding these vegetables.

Aftercare

It should be noted that brambles when grown in the wild, create a tangle of branches and stems. This is because these vegetables form roots that sprout from the stems as soon as they touch the ground. This is why it is so important to maintain stems when growing blackberries. If they start touching the ground, things will eventually become tangled and this will make harvesting the fruit much more difficult, resulting in the loss of a significant portion of the production.

For the same reason, it is also necessary to prune blackberries. This is usually done in the summer. The idea is to remove all dry and lignified branches. They appear after fruiting. Therefore, the best time to remove them is immediately after harvesting the fruit. Winter pruning, known as a topping, is also highly recommended. It mainly serves to help early breakouts. It is these shoots that will bear fruit next season.

Another fundamental aspect of caring for any plant is watering. In the case of blackberries, it should be rare, but often. The root system of these plants does not go very deep into the ground. In fact, it usually stays on a very superficial level. For this reason, it is extremely important not to flood the soil so as not to flood the roots, and to water little by little, but more often. This aspect becomes even more important during flowering and fruit sets, as is usually the case with fruit crops. The best option we have for blackberries is to use a drip irrigation system.

As for the reproduction of this vegetable, there are no problems here, as you can already imagine. Rather the complete opposite. However, if we want to reproduce our blackberries, it’s as simple as cutting off the protruding stems and putting them in the ground. They will not force themselves to take root for a long time, given their outstanding capabilities. With a little patience and watering, we will soon have another blackberry.

Now that we know how to plant blackberries, it’s time to answer the big question: when will they bear fruit? While blackberries do look a lot like raspberries, there is a very important difference between the two. While raspberries can be harvested twice a year, blackberries only have one annual harvest.

Luckily we won’t have to wait long for our first blackberry as this plant has an early production capacity. While fruit trees typically take five to seven years to reach optimum performance, blackberries achieve this as early as their second year. The season of the year when we can enjoy its delicious fruits is in the summer.

I recommend trying to grow your own blackberries if you live in a place where the weather permits, of course. In addition to the fact that the fruits are very beautiful, they are also delicious.
